NYFW SS 18 Full Recap + Vlog

GALTISCOPIO

Galtiscopio is a brand founded in Paris that designs women’s clothing and accessories, mainly watches and jewelry. The clothing aligned perfectly with Galtiscopio’s focus on jewelry as each item featured a jeweled embellishment in some way. Models strutted down the runway wearing a variety of silk slip dresses in an array of colors (purple being one of my favorites). Diamond embellishments still played a large role in the second part of the collection. One model even wore a pair of headphones covered in crystals.

CONCEPT KOREA

Concept Korea is a biannual fashion show, supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea and organized by Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), to showcase Korean designers' collections at NYFW in the hope of expanding overseas business and awareness of up-and-coming Korean designer brands. Running its 16th show, I was super excited to check out the homegrown brands LIE and GREEDILOUS. What appealed to were the employing feminine silhouettes to casual wear and the unique way of mixing a variety of fabrics in one garment, making K-fashion look daring and stylish, yet very wearable – in other words, it's considered commercial enough without losing its edge.

KATIE GALLAGHER

For her 17th collection, Katie Gallagher captured a cold spring day in clothing form. Simply titled (“Rain”) and attached to a Joanna Klink poem (“Some Feel Rain”), the collection stuck to a palette of inky black and frosted blue. For an hour, models cycled through a set presentation: Thunder would clap, a digital animation of abstract raindrops would splash across their faces, and each girl would take a slow, winding turn around the platform stage to better showcase the pieces. I would say there would be some ballet influence within her spring collection with those faux leotards in tights with mink sashes tied over one shoulder, a floor-grazing tulle skirt trimmed in black grosgrain, and the messy ballet buns on models’ heads.

BACKSTAGE AT TIBI WITH AVEDA

My second season going backstage with Aveda, I always look forward to seeing some of my favorite designer's collections and creative directions up close and personal. And Tibi always has such amazing pieces along with great hair and makeup. Strong, feminine and minimal are the three words I'd use to describe Tibi. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, there were tons of Nineties vibes, with mannish sporty looks on top of what Tibi is known for which is amazing tailoring and killer accessories. Can we please chit chat about these patent leather lavender mules I MUST have in my life come spring?! ;)

TAORAY WANG

Taoray Wang is designed for the powerful, professional and modern woman who wants to be stylish, elegant and sexy. The brand serves a global and confident woman who is not afraid to show her femininity in edgy design while she plays her role as a politician, lawyer, and other executive roles. Classic men's fabrics and lines are tamed into silhouettes of armored grace. “Customers are not defined by race or nationality. They have an international background, they embrace diversity and are open-minded to try different things. They are well-educated,well-traveled and are multi-cultural. Dramatic cinched waists, slouchy sleeves and fringe were some of my favorite features in this season's SS18 collection.

YUNA YANG

Yuna Yang is inspired by the colors, textures, and narratives in fine art combined with her love of detail and unique Eastern perspective on Western aesthetics. Featuring women’s high-end designer wear, each design in the collection leverages a modern vision that harmonizes the quality of traditional couture.  Proudly designed and made in New York, Yang uses materials from around the world for her collection that can be found in selected high-end boutiques across the US, Middle East, and Asia. Her latest collection, called "Save the Earth," is made in New York and uses Korean silks, recycled organic cotton, and lace and hand beading from India. The designs take on the shapes found in nature such as flowers and features the color green often.

BACKSTAGE AT TOME WITH AVEDA

TOME's SS18 collection was like a deconstructed rainbow. A colorful lineup where multicolored stripes came alive through the movement of accordion pleats. Based in New York TOME sees the pair’s collective experience expressed in a range that is practical and straightforward – clean cut, essential dressing. Form follows function and every TOME piece is ethically produced, with a view toward inclusivity and diversity.

BACKSTAGE AT PUBLIC SCHOOL NYC WITH AVEDA

Street-savvy clothing line Public School is the brainchild of New York-born and bred designers, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne. Growing up, both Chow and Osborne attended public school in New York City, and that had a huge influence on their lives. “At public school here, you could tell who groups of students were by what they wore,” Osborne explained, which ignited the designer’s interest in clothing. What I really enjoyed was the makeup, most especially an updated version to a smokey eye... I'd prefer to call it the gasoline eye given the tar-like greasy appearence, it's such a cool look!

VIVIENNE TAM

For her spring show, Vivienne Tam found inspiration in Raman Hui’s Chinese 3-D fantasy movie Monster Hunt, the story of a mythical land where humans and monsters coexist. In particular, the collection spotlighted Wuba, the cute little monster protagonist of the movie. His funny image appeared on a range of pieces, from straw bags to feminine dresses, including airy asymmetric silk styles and a shirtdress featuring a drawstring at the waist. The movie also inspired the lineup’s palette of soft, pastel colors, as well as the graphic motifs of mountains and river landscapes, which were printed and embroidered on breezy frocks and cotton shirts with silk panels. Despite the main inspiration, the aesthetic wasn’t too childlike. She actually infused a free-spirited, nomadic vibe into her lively collection, where pretty ruffled silk and cotton lace dresses were styled with ethnic sash belts and utilitarian fanny packs worn as cross-body bags.

LIU BOLIN

Better known as "The Invisible Man" in media circles, Liu Bolin sprang from a generation of artists struggling with the consequences of the Cultural Revolution and the rapid economic development in the decades after. He discusses the social concerns of his home country through his artistic practice, most prominently through his 'camouflage' installations. Traversing mediums such as performance, photography and social activism, Liu Bolin dissects the tense relationship between the individual and society by 'disappearing' into environments which are sites of intrigue, contention, and criticism. His debut collection of inspired and editioned garments are hand painted and are inspired by Liu Bolin's politically charged photographs produced in the U.S. This project was inspired by 12 years of collaborations with various fashion powerhouses, including Lanvin, Gaultier, and Moncler, an outstanding musical performance by seven-year-old piano prodigy Zhao ZItang and Musical Director Charlie Klarsfelt set the tone for the gallery-like innovative presentation.

BACKSTAGE AT ZERO & MARIA CORNEJO AND AVEDA

In particular, the designer said that for her spring effort, she wanted to re-create that sense of youthfulness and freedom that her collections of the time exuded. Makeup was done by the super talented Dick Page and with Mac Cosmetics. I loved how fresh and simple the looks were, and the sleek 90s hair done by SVP Creative Director, Antoinette Beenders. Even the nails were spot on!

LANYU

LANYU’s shapes proudly show off a woman’s body and her natural femininity, helping her exude her inner confidence and beauty. LANYU is the namesake brand of China’s premiere luxury designer Lan Yu. Lan Yu’s design often incorporates Su embroidery - a traditional technique that has been handed down for generations in the designer’s family and is best known for its elegance, intricacy and photorealistic quality. I loved the pastel blues incorporated into the creamy neutral toned palettes. And red didn't fail to make an appearance even in a more subtly-colored collection. I'm telling ya', that color is going to be hot, hot, hot this fall!

MIMI PROBER

Mimi Prober is a New York based designer and Fashion Institute of Technology graduate. Her signature collection is handcrafted using recovered fragments of antique materials dating from the 18th to early 20th centuries, natural and locally produced luxury fibers, as well as botanical based dye methods that have been uniquely developed into custom textiles that are organically designed, artisanal, and seasonless. Through a zero-waste philosophy, each piece is created by hand with one of a kind placement that highlights the individual history and story. Prober is celebrated for her decorative and unique beading, embroidery, and lace designs. Integrating the artistry of the past and establishing a sustainable future through the reuse of antique materials to create modern handcrafted heirlooms. Honoring the hands that created the art.

MARCEL OSTERTAG

Marcel Ostertag is maker and brand in one. In his studio, surrounded by the pulsating streets of the Gaertnerplatz quarter, he creates his collections which are set between tradition and modernity. During his studies at the renowned Central St. Martins College in London, Marcel Ostertag could extend his feeling and know how for fashion and is constantly developing thanks to numerous international shows and collaborations. Catwalk shows in Shanghai, Beijing, London and Vienna are in the meantime routine, as is the seasonal show in the course of the Berlin fashion week. He draws his inspiration from nature, encounters with interesting people, travels and foreign countries – but never forgets his roots. He has worked on projects with Burberry, Paul Smith and Dunhill, furthermore great brands such as Miele and Volkswagen are amongst his customers. He finally devoted himself to the glamour of fashion with the founding of his own label Marcel Ostertag in 2006. His fashion is exclusively produced in Germany, as his credo is quality needs control. That is what his style demands and you can feel it in every fantastic piece by Marcel Ostertag.

How to Survive NYFW with Dove

Thank you Dove for sponsoring this post.

Hey guys! Today is my last day of NYFW, and as much as I look forward to the madness that ensues during this week, I'm also looking forward to things calming down a bit. This fashion week, I outdid myself and literally burnt out yesterday from running around nonstop with 3-4 hours of sleep per day... I think doing it all by myself from attending the shows and events to documenting everything through photographs and videography (I'm even doing my first fashion week vlog on my YouTube channel this season! Coming soon!) to making it to appointments and meetings and then burning the midnight oil with edits can definitely take a toll on one person. It's a lot. So in today's post, I've partnered with one of my favorite brands of all time, Dove, to share with you guys on how to survive your first fashion week with these simple & healthy tips!

1. NOURISH YOUR SKIN

3 in 4 dermatologists say that women often damage their skin in the shower, thinking they are caring for it. When it comes to cleansing, all skin deserves gentleness which is why 88% of dermatologists advise women to use a gentle cleanser when showering. Only Dove Body Wash is made with 100% gentle cleansers, is sulfate-free and is the #1 dermatologist recommended body wash. There's no other body wash that I use, I have been swearing by Dove for over a decade! My skin always feels so nourished - why would you want anything but silky smooth skin? You can purchase Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash in many food, drug, mass, value, club and online retailers nationwide - or here as well.

2. TRY TO EAT RIGHT

Any fashionista knows in order to survive fashion week, you've gotta add some carbs into your diet! But as easy and as delicious as this may sound in the given moment, try to eat things in moderation. Going all out on pizza one night? No need to fret... have a yummy healthy breakfast the following morning to balance your meal intake and to feel less guilty about that extra slice of pepperoni you probably shouldn't have had but the cocktails got to you. Ha ha ha! I'm not a brekkie gal by any means, but this season I've really been watching what I eat before starting long days (we're talking 14+ hrs on some of 'em... eek.) I love smoothie bowls or smoothies in general. I love being able to take my food with me on the go!

3. A LITTLE SPLURGE NEVER KILLED NOBODY

Okay... so this might totally conflict with tip #2, but YOLO, am I right? A little treat like a few macaroons in between shows not only will give you that sugar rush you're probably in desperate need of, but you'll feel great because you've treated yourself to something yummier than leafy greens or quinoa. And treating yourself isn't limited to food either. Splurge on a nice bubble bath (using Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash makes some extra bubbles) if you aren't taking a night off or go on a shopping spree for some much needed retail therapy after coveting all the new collections straight off the runway! Just don't blame me for being a bad 'influence'! ;)

4. CELEBRATE ALONE TIME

As much as I love networking, going out and meeting people and being extra social during fashion week, everyone has their limits. Being a writer, I enjoy my solitude. I've gotten used to being alone a lot, and quite honestly I prefer it this way when it comes to relaxing. I also always feel so guilty when I'm not able to spend as much time with my German shepherd dog, MaQ. He is my fur child and I hate the idea of him being alone while I'm out and about. In between my schedule, I'll either get up extra early to have a nice, long walk with him before being out all day or I'll take an extra hour during the day (or any chance I can get with him) to spend some time with him. Our bond is maaaadddd strong and as much as I'd love to take him with me everywhere I go, it's not the reality of the situation. So instead I improvise and value my time even during one of the busiest work weeks of the year.

Tell me, my fellow fabulous fashionistas: what are some tips you have for surviving fashion week? Whether it be your diet, workout regiment and more, I'd love to hear from you! Don't forget to shop Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash and to leave your comments down below! To see more from my everyday action during NYFW, follow along on my Instagram! I'll be sharing all of my fashion week outfits on the blog on Friday, plus more designers and my first fashion week vlog! Stay tuned, so much new exciting content coming your way in the very near future!

CLEVER and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

NYFW SS 18 Day 1: PH5, Greta Constantine, Noon by Noor and Tadashi Shoji

PH5

PH5 is a New York City based advanced contemporary womenswear label founded by Wei Lin in 2014. Designed by Parsons-trained Mijia Zhang and backed by a solid knitwear manufacturer, PH5 redefines knitwear by adding colorful and playful techniques. To meet the needs of a generation of creatives, PH5 offers innovative knit and knit-woven garments that reflect a sense of individualistic and cool sophisticated personality. Their inspiration this season is artificial flowers and focuses on human influence and manipulation of nature. Inspired by the works of Mark Quinn, Thomas Stim and Dieter Huber, their SS 18 presentation pushed boundaries against the relentless desire in us all to control nature through fashion and beauty. The models were diverse, a mix of body types, ages, and heights (yay), there was even a male model. Can you tell which one? This collection I found to be very beautiful.

GRETA CONSTANTINE

CAFA 2016 Womenswear Designer of the Year winner Greta Constantine is an accessible luxury line of ready-to-wear womenswear based in Toronto, Canada. Designers Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong have quickly accumulated a clientele comprised of international socialites and celebrities alike. The SS 18 presentation pleasantly surprised me as I know their work and this was something quite different from what they normally do. 80s disco-glam inspired sequins with pops of neon, big hoop earrings, and fierce stiletto nails. The inevitable product of their focus on the female form is design emboldened by sexuality. And you can definitely say this collection is ultra-sexy, glamorous and fun. Truly effortless with modern sensibility,. The glitterati have arrived!

NOON BY NOOR

Noon By Noor is a Bahrain based womenswear label founded in 2008 by designers Shaikha Noor Al Khalifa and Shaikha Haya Al Khalifa. Cousins and friends since childhood, they studied Fashion Design in the United States and after graduating, returned to Bahrain to bring their vision to life. Modern and effortless with a focus on striking prints and intricate embellishments, Noon By Noor’s refined aesthetic fuses understated luxury with a playful femininity. Inspiration is drawn from both Eastern and Western influences with an emphasis on sharp tailoring, clean silhouettes and attention to detail. What I loved most about their SS 18 collection was the input of color! More especially, red. This trend will be hot, hot, hot - from head to toe!

TADASHI SHOJI

Well-dressed women worldwide continue to flock to the brand’s new designs that are both modern and fresh. First Lady Michelle Obama, Octavia Spencer, Kate Hudson, Miranda Kerr, and Katy Perry are all fans of the line. The inspiration behind Japanese designer Tadashi Shoji's SS 18 Collection 'Golden State of Mind' was the pure bliss of the West Coast. It was a wonderful blend of bohemian and luxury, and being it was the first time seeing this designer, I was so in love with the collection. Everything was so well-made right down to the set design. Stay tuned for a lot more upcoming NYFW content! I'm even working on a vlog this season! Coming soon... :)

Untitled-1f.jpg

Happy NYFW! Let the fashion commence! Who is as excited as I am to see all of the SS18 collections for the upcoming season?! Since today is our first day of New York Fashion Week, I wanted to share with you guys a little more about my journey. What led me to here? Well, the title of this post sure must have caught your eye. Yes, you read correctly. I once almost became a cop instead of any of pursuit for a career. Instead of Detective Spiegoski, I'm Fashionista Spiegoski! So, how did I start from where I began and ended up here where I am today? Continue reading to find out more why I took such a leap of faith and why I am so, so, so grateful for my crazy (but intuitive) decisions.

IMG_9993f.jpg
Untitled-12.jpg

Once upon a time, I grew up in an environment that was rough, both in and outside the home. Because of my surroundings as well as life experiences, I initially chose a path in law enforcement, even receiving a B.A. in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University. I even traveled to distant lands to learn more about the cultural diversity as well as the different types of government and policing procedures. My '5-Year Plan' was to get my degree, move to NYC and join the New York City Police Department, and quickly climbing the ranks from Sargeant to Detective. Specifically? Homicide. But once I moved to the city of my dreams (I had wanted to live here basically my whole life), I didn't know a single soul. I came here with $300 bucks in my pocket, 3 full suitcases, with a place to share in Spanish Harlem. My first apartment in New York was literally a closet. Okay... walk-in closet: Enough to fit a full bed, dresser, mirror and a clothing rack. I didn't need much else.

Untitled-14.jpg

Because I didn't know anyone yet, I became lonely rather fast. With that, I began writing again, something that's been in my life since I was very little (my father taught me how to read and write at the age of 4) and I always found solitude in the power of my voice and the freedom to express my thoughts and feelings through words. And while doing so, my gut switched a flip. I no longer had the desire I once had in the career I chose. I felt lost. Confused. Young. Undiscovered. I gave it a good hard look before changing my mind, but I'm tellin' ya, even to this day, I can't tell you how thankful I am that I took that jump and decided to explore my options a bit further. From this, I've given back, teaching figure skating and working with kids for nearly a decade, wrote and published a novel, have had my photographs published around the world, and learned so much about myself in the process.

Untitled-17.jpg

I just surpassed my 2-year anniversary of my blog, MaQ + Suz. Since then, I've only attended 2 seasons of NYFW [this week being my 3rd season (!)] and am starting to receive invites to other fashion shows globally. Now, for those of you wondering... have I always been a die-hard fashionista? Not exactly... but it's always been with me, so to speak. When I was very young, I used to illustrate what campaigns I saw from the Korean fashion magazines my mother had. I'd flip through them, find inspiration and would recreate my own version, with even the prices of each piece of clothing! From there, I became more interested in the world of fashion while in college (where I started to read Vogue religiously) but that fizzled once I decided to do something else in my life. It's funny now looking back because even at the age of 6-7 I was already studying fashion when I was creating collages of them on my bedroom walls.

I believe within a person's life, one will change many times over. Hopefully for the better. As you grow older and discover more about yourself, you will find out what you want, what you don't want, and who you really are. Part of the evolution of the path to self-discovery. And here I am now, a writer and photographer working full-time in the creative field and I couldn't be happier with my choice. Is it hard work? You bet your ass it is and I'm completely dedicated to it. Here's to making life's grand decisions and to fashion & style. Shoutout to this vintage teal blouse that belonged to my mother, the label says 'Avanzara–b House of Kimberly' but I can't find the brand on the internet. It's from the 80's back in Cali... and to these favorite new rose gold metallic boots from Ego, I feel like Wonder Woman strutting around in these. Hope to see all you other fabulous selves strutting around town as well this week! Happy Happy Fashion Week! :)

NYFW AW17 – Events

Last NYFW post! I'm sharing with you guys some highlights from the many events I attended last week. Let's start with one of my favorite annual New York Fashion Week events with ShopStyle, a super fun social event for bloggers and influencers where you can borrow great pieces, we're talking designer-label clothes, shoes, bags, and more accessories, to style as you wish or just to wear around town during fashion week! Check out my picks from H&M and French Connection I chose to style in this post HERE.

On top of this, there was also an illustrator who did sketches of many fashionistas (I opted out as the line was too long for my liking) a Gigi New York pop up where you could get a monogrammed envelope and even a photo session with a photographer out on the terrace with the NYC skyline as a background.

Now, let's discuss the 'REAL' highlight of my time at NYFW last week. You see, I'm normally quite self-conscious when it comes to meeting those I admire. But my new career in the world of blogging has greatly helped me build the courage to always just GO FOR IT. If you truly want to meet someone, my belief is mind over matter. It'll happen if that's what you want, deep down. Call it fate, but I don't think we are all just floating around waiting to bump into each other. I feel you meet people for a reason.

I met a few famous bloggers, such as Heidi Nazarudin (@theambitionista) and Jiawa Liu (@beigerenegade) pictured above, and both were incredibly kind and down-to-earth! But the one blogger I literally lost my sh*t over, was the one and only, Chriselle Lim. She is my idol and has made such a tremendous impact on my life. I heard about a pop-up she was doing with Thakoon and even though I really wanted to meet her, I was too chicken to go alone. So after filming a YouTube segment at a nearby hotel for a new up-and-coming app, my new friends encouraged me to go, giving me the moral support that I needed, they joined forces with me! I was so nervous and kept trying to remain cool, calm and collected but the moment we met, tears started to come down in buckets! I apologized profusely trying to gain my composure but it was too much for me. Chriselle has helped me through very difficult times in my life most have no idea about, and for that, I'm eternally grateful for her. I could go on and on about how amazing she is, but she is such a true inspiration and just being able to tell her face-to-face what she has done for me will mean more to me than anyone could ever imagine. AND she was SO genuine - nothing about her is fake! It was such a heartfelt moment, I will never forget this meeting!

The same night I met Chriselle I also attended the photo exhibition party of Luka Sabbat's 'Hot Mess' at Milk Studios, an intimate but POPPIN' event and that basically culminated into a rager that night. It was one of the dopest parties I've been to in a while. The young creatives' endeavor drew A-list guests like Kendall Jenner, Hailey Baldwin, Pusha T, A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ferg, AlunaGeorge, Tyler the Creator, Cardi B, Mickey Boardman, Virgil Abloh, Heron Preston, Larsen Thompson, JunglePussy and Kerwin Frost among others.

I also attended Stylinity's event at Lulu Frost, which showcases GORGEOUS, decadent jewelry and vintage clothing. Veronica Webb, famous model & actress (who's 50 WHOA & from Detroit like myself) made an appearance to talk about her experiences and advice in the realm of blogging, which was insightful, funny and fresh. I learned a lot from listening to others and she was full of wisdom, humor, and strength. Number one lesson? Always keep it real and remain true to yourself.

Which brings us to our last event with Lifetime's, 'Women Behind the Seams' at Milk Studios. Photographer, Christelle de Castro's portraits of many women behind the scenes during fashion week, such as Tziporah Salamon, who was one of Bill Cunningham's favorite muse, showcased the faces behind many doers, muses and makers that don't get as much recognition as other may get in the fashion world. And I thought this to be wonderful. I hope you guys enjoyed all my NYFW content! Would love to hear from you and what you'd like to see more of next season! And stay tuned for more upcoming fashion & beauty posts this week! Have a lovely weekend. :)
